What Happens After a Failed DOT Drug or Alcohol Test?
I you have violated DOT drug or alcohol regulations, you cannot perform DOT safety-sensitive duties again until you complete the required SAP process.
A DOT violation can include a verified positive drug test, an alcohol test result of 0.04 or higher, a refusal to test, or certain other violations of DOT drug and alcohol regulations.
The first step is an evaluation with a DOT- qualified SAP.
What Is a DOT SAP Evaluation?
A Substance Abuse Professional is a specially qualified professional who evaluates employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations.
The SAP does not simply “clear” someone to return to work.
The SAP completes a comprehensive assessment and determines what education, treatment, or other support is appropriate. Every employee who enters the DOT return-to-duty process must receive a recommendation for education and/or treatment.
Once you have completed the recommendations, you return to the SAP for a follow-up evaluation.
